Amsterdam – Surviving the Red Light District & Good Bye

Going back home is always a very sad time for me.

I set out from the hotel towards the Central station in order to head for the airport. However, rather than take a leisurely stroll, I took the shorted path and quickly realised I was passing through the Red Light District. Thankfully, it was morning – so was mostly deserted. Here is:

Maria’s Guide to Surviving the Red Light District

  1. Know where the Red Light District is on the map to avoid it.
  2. Mornings are less busy (so walking tours during that time are probably better).
  3. If you end up, look straight (to avoid getting killed by gazillions of bike locals used), but not left or right unless turning.
  4. If you hear knocking on a shop window – Don’t look in that direction – that is what you’re avoiding.
  5. Avoid smaller alleyways. as they are less expensive so would have more such shops.

We did a boat tour on the beaten path to kill time and set off to the airport.  It is always a bitter sweet time, the end of a trip – looking forward to going home but secretly wishing the time could extend; the not caring about anything, not having to make breakfast or washing dishes – lol, just looking for mini-adventures, fun weekends, seeing different people, practices and languages is nice. Getting a culture-shock and going outside the comfort zone is even better.

One more advise – try to get cash in order to avoid spending extra many places charge on credit card usage – which is unavoidable in some hotels and train stations.

Overall I would rate Amsterdam at:

Factor Rating
Wearing Abaya without getting stares: Yes
Being a Muslim and walking around: Comfortable
Halal food Availability: Mostly doner
Mosques available: Some areas
Was it worth going: Yes

  • MASHAAALLAH!!! Thank you!

Seriously, thank you! I was browsing the internet for God knows how long trying to find info about Muslims traveling to Amsterdam – mosque, halal food! Phewwww your website saved me.

Thank you again and may Allah reward you.

If you ever, ever, ever come to Dubai – please email me and I will show you life in the fast lane muslims style inshaAllah!

Horse riding before sunrise, freediving, jet skiing, skiing all in the comfort of your abaya – at least that’s how I do it!

Love your site, will be here often and please don’t stop writing! Stay in touch, you have my email address x

  • By the way! I will be in Malaysia in December at this camp as a facilitator – you are more than welcome to join us! Even if you decide not to – email me so we can meet up inshaAllah.

    • I’m currently planning my onward journey and will let you know once I’ve sorted out the plans further 🙂

      • Sara Boyd I totally understand your argument — could’ve used more. But even so, is there such a thing as “enough bacon?” Seems like an oxy moron to me 🙂

    • I'm with you, Mary, about not waiting for the "proper" time to put up a post. I have not one but two cassoulets lounging in my drafts folder because I didn't get to them in the middle of winter and now here it is, spring. It's just silly not to post them. All that aside, your burger looks superbly delicious, and I can't wait to make that relish. Happy travels!

  • jazakhallahairun for your posts. having seen a very cheap deal to Amsterdam i googled mosques and Muslims, however given all the negatives around I would have still been unsure. But your feedback makes all the difference -love the table May Allah reward you for easing other travellers journeys and keep blogging!

  • I have to convey my admiration for your generosity giving support to visitors who actually need guidance on this important theme. Your personal commitment to getting the solution around had been astonishingly functional and has always permitted individuals much like me to realize their aims. Your personal insightful guidelines implies a lot to me and much more to my colleagues. Many thanks; from all of us.
