Amsterdam – The Mice Problem
As a Muslim, Amsterdam is probably not the first city that comes to mind for a break. The wildly popular “coffee houses” and the women knocking on windows isn’t exactly the halal entertainment. The growing popularity of Ayaan Hirsi and Geert Wilders also made me wonder if I’d be attacked for wearing an Abaya. But, I’ve been to Greece in their deteriorating economic and social circumstances which went well, so I thought Amsterdam would be safe.
With expiring Frequent Flyer miles (note: need spending) and the convenience of London City Airport meant I didn’t have to trek for 2 hours to get to the airport, or get bored in flight with my husband continuously waking me up excited about cloud formation. I thought I’d give it a punt. The plan was set – meet my husband on Friday after work and spend four nights exploring Holland.
We got to Schipol airport/train station and weren’t entirely sure what establishments were halal, so went with a Mediterranean pizza – Mozzarella, pesto, tomato and basil – fresh from the oven. Unfortunately, that didn’t last long as a mouse appeared below our high chairs shortly to steal anything that the diners may have dropped. After that it was a matter of just stuffing food to not to feel hungry.
The cheapest option near the airport was Citizen M Hotel – interesting concept for a room – wide spacious beds, stuffed animal for cuddling and pods for toilet and shower behind the viscose curtains.
